UP-FRONT MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB LEADER:

It is quite often that people come into this club with the wrong idea of what a 4X4 Club is and what we do here as Yuma 4X4 as a 4X4 Club. Sometimes we get young people that think 4-wheeling is about total freedom to do whatever they want in the desert, including getting drunk and driving their 4X4. They come with the preconceived idea that 4-wheeling is all about damage. All this is false! Trails closures are on the rise since Obama got into office. Millions of acres were closed to off-roading in 2009. More land and trails are slated for closure in 2010.

Don't get me wrong! We get some older folks that come in and have an idea of what they think a 4X4 Club is and how it should be ran. Some of them have "advised" me that I should charge people to be in the club. Once in a blue moon we get a senior that think they entitled to some sort of special treatment. WRONG! I don't care where you came from, or who you worked for, or what war you fought in, nobody is entitled to anything, including special treatment!

When ever I hear someone say things like; "I've been 4-wheeling for [blank amount] of years...", or "I grew up Jeep'n" I don't listen, so don't bother wasting your breath. Just show us what you know. Once I had a guy claim he had been off-roading for more than 35 years, and he's never had to air down his tires. Here's some pictures of the guy, on his first and last run with us, doing a recovery of a Suzuki Samurai. I call him a Dumb-Ass! This guy made a number of mistakes within about 30 minutes. Mistake #1 - He did not wait for the Trail Leader to issue the order to begin the recovery. Mistake #2 - He backed his rig down the hill. Mistake #3 - He put the other driver and his rig in danger of being damaged, injured, or killed by flying rocks. The logical order would have been to have a 4X4 equipped with a winch park at the top and winch the Samurai up the hill. A few rigs in the group had winches, including the dumb-ass! If he had been 4-wheeling for 35 years, I think he would have been able to figure that out. He was just being a dumb-ass. We never saw the guy in the Samurai again. He told me that he was scared to death. He couldn't see where he was going and just prayed that he was still on the trail. This is just one example of the many dumb-asses that come out and do something stupid. Some of you foothills residents might recognize the Jeep.

I run a very tight ship here. Most people, young and old alike, are often in agreement with the way I run things here. The ones that don't agree don't stay long. I've been running this club for 5 years. By now, I know what works and what don't.

My goal is NOT to restrict, or control anyone. My goals are to keep the sport of 4-wheeling fun, safe, legal and to keep out trails and public lands open to the public. If you don't get this, please stay away from this 4X4 Club!

THE FACTS:

The fact is, this club has one (1) leader. No "president". No "chairman". No "club officers". It was not my intention to have it this way, but it is, what it is because the members chose to have it this way. I have been doing it this way for so long, it is no longer a debate. If you can't handle someone else being in charge, then you need to find another club. EXCEPTION: There are some members that I go to for issues where I think I need other opinions. These members are my CO-LEADERS. Besides coming to me, you can go to them if you need help.

Another fact fact is, we all started out in this 4X4 Club as strangers. None of us knew each other from Adam. So we probably don’t know you and you probably don’t know us either. Here's some ground rules we have come up with to sort of set the mood. You can read these and decide from the start if this is the right club for you, or not. We understand that when people come together, sometimes they clash. That's just part of being human. We just ask that if you can't do things our way, just keep on stepping. We have a good relationship with each other. Over 70 active members are in this Club and we all get along. We all might not always see eye-to-eye on everything, but we don't argue about those issues.

The most important fact is, this is a 4X4 Club and we all need to make the effort to get along here. Anyone coming in and causing a disruption, or fails to follow rules we have set will be told (not asked) to leave and don't come back!

Ground rules to follow:

  1. Participation is vital to the club's success. We expect everone to be as active as they can. We understand there's work, family, and other stuff that may take a higher priority, over 4-wheeling, but there's no excuse for total inactivity.

    • As with any new friendship, all new members must give a proper introduction. Just go go to the Yuma 4X4 Forum and go to NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS. You only need to tell us a little bit about yourself and your rig. The other members will welcome you into the club. If you don't want to introduce yourself, then you're probably not serious about being a member in this club and your account will be deleted on the very next Friday.
    • If ninety (90) days passes and we don't here a peep from you, we will assume that you have lost interest in being a member of this club and your account will be deleted. If you just don't know what to say, just go to the Yuma 4X4 Forum and go to CURRENT MEMBER CHECK-IN to do a simple "check-in"

  2. We provide a full service club without the full service cost to members. Membership is free, so nobody has the right to complain about anything. If you don’t like the way this club is handled, just walk off. You have no investment here, so you have nothing to lose by walking away. Your quitting won't hurt the Club Leader, or the Club either. We have many good people here. We don't need jerks!
  3. We do NOT do personal phone calls! All Club communication is done through our website (www.yuma4x4.org) and emails on the internet. If you wish to join, you will need a computer and internet access to communicate with us. EXCEPTION: The Yuma 4X4 Search and 4X4 Recovery are the only ones that phone calls are OK. If you get stuck, or stranded in the remote part of the desert, call us: (928) 329-8390. If you know someone that is missing, call the sheriff's office, then call us. We charge little, or nothing for our help.
  4. Show respect for Yuma. The club’s name is The Yuma 4-Wheelers. That should be a good indicator that we are proud of our hot little town. Saying bad things about Yuma is insulting to us.

I don’t like whiners, but I do welcome suggestions. Yes, there’s a difference. If I like the suggestion, I’ll use it and see how it works.

  5. Most of us are low keyed here. Turbulently and noisy people tend to make us uncomfortable.
  6. Jokes are funny, but only in person. Joking around on the forum can be misinterpreted. It’s not banned, but it's not recommended.
  7. Please speak American English on the forums. Some members don’t speak, or understand anything else.
  8. Don’t come here just to sell your junk.
  9. Nobody associated with Yuma 4X4 will be liable for any damage to yourself, equipment, 3rd party or entity that arises from any actions or activities based on the content from this website. If someone tells you to weld your gas tank and it blows up on you, that's your own damn fault. Don't blame us. Use your head!
  10. Politics is a hot topic now days and most people in this club are not in agreement of the current administration’s policies. There's a few that are, so if the topic should arise, and it looks like things are going peaceful, I'll let it be. If it looks like someone is getting bent out of shape, I'll delete the whole discussion. This goes for all topics, not just the political ones.

The Yuma 4X4 Forums are not intended to promote freedom of speech at the cost of losing members, upsetting the group as a whole, or causing problems within the Club.

Thus, I have a responsibility to ensure that posts which the group would find upsetting, grossly off-topic or designed to cause trouble (i.e. flaming) are deleted and members who continually violate this are removed and banned forever with no appeal.

Most people understand that freedom of speech is null and void in forums, but for those who keep crying "censorship" I'd like to suggest that if you start your own forum, you'll have all the freedom you want.

It's the Law!
Most of the trails in our riding area is managed either by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), or the United States Marines (Barry M. Goldwater Range). Their rules can be strict at times, but we must always remember to follow them! If you can't follow rules, then we don't need you fouling things up and we ask that you find another club that is more to your liking.

Gun laws in Arizona are more lax than in California. If you carry a loaded firearm into the State of California, and you get caught with it, be prepared to go to jail, have your rig towed, and have you firearm(s) confiscated.

Drinking alcohol while driving off-road is illegal in all 50 states. BLM has ticketed people for an "open container". The tickets are $350.00. We do not have a rule against drinking on our Trail Rides, we just ask that if you do, please be responsible and be smart about it.

Laws pertaining to public lands are found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 43 Public Lands: Interior. For more information about off-roading on public lands, go to 43 C.F.R. PART 8340 - OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

  • The Yuma 4-Wheelers 4X4 Club (Yuma 4X4) is a "Trail Club" open to everyone with an interest in 4-wheeling.
  • We follow all rules and laws that are enforced, so that we can keep our trails open and public lands, public. We are always in full cooperation with the BLM, Border Patrol and local law enforcement. All members, new and old, are expected to to do the same.
  • We like to run washes and trails and where ever it is legal to travel. We don't do extreme rock crawling, mud bogging, or sand duning.
  • Although we like a challenge from time to time, we don't go out to see how much damage we can cause to our rigs, or the environment.
  • Only 4X4 trucks and SUV's are welcome on our Trail Rides.

We don't put up with anyone acting like idiots!
Some things we don't put up with (but not limited to) are:
  • Reckless driving
  • littering
  • Harassing/harming animals
  • Vandalizing anything that lays out in the desert.
  • Playing loud music
  • Blasting horns
  • Intoxication
  • Illegal drug use/possession
  • Brandishing firearms. Guns are welcome, just don't be showing them off. Most of us are not familiar with each other, and a gun being shown off will make some of us nervous.
  • Anyone refusing to follow our rules!

Personal Requirements:

  • Members of Yuma 4X4 strive to maintain an impressive reputation in the off-roading community. Each and every member of Yuma 4X4 is expected to maintain and endeavor to enhance our history and reputation. If you are not familiar with Proper Trail Etiquette, you can learn more here...
  • All drivers are to be 18 years old, or older. Exceptions may be made if the parent is present.
  • All drivers must be licensed
  • No phone calls! All club communication is done through the website and email. So, Club Members are required to have computer access.
I asked for an explanation for quitting, and this is what I was told:
"What did it for me was that you did not bother to pick up the phone and call me after you decided to cancel the run".
It is always the responsibility of the individual member to check their email and the website for any updates that may occur at any time. Although I claim: "Scheduled times and dates are subject to change without notice". I still try to send email, or private messages (PM) to inform members that a change has occurred. If you sign up for a trail ride, you need to check for updates the morning of the event. I run a 4X4 club. I am not running a daycare center!

Rig Requirements:
All vehicles:

  • Must meet the legal requirements for driving on the roads and highways in the state of Arizona.
  • Must be a 4X4 truck, or SUV in good mechanical condition. 4X4's with known mechanical issues should never be taken off road, until they are fixed.
